On Monday, April 17th the Crops Club and NorCal CAPCA Chapter hosted the 2nd installment of Pizza with a PCA at Farm Star Pizza. Anna, Bob, Calvin, and Mark had the opportunity to share their story from the Pest Control Advisor salesperson perspective as well as from the view of a Product Manufacturer, two positions which work closely together to assist farmers with their crops. Our members were able to leave with a variety of knowledge intended to help jump-start their career and make that transition between college and their professional life. Important takeaways listed below include:
Tips for success: Make goals for personal success, develop a community from the industry connections you gain in school, envelop the spirit of a self-starter, take risks and reach out to those in industry, be willing to work hard
Challenges of being a PCA/Manufacturer: Adapting to different cropping systems, working with regulation as it becomes stricter due to legislation, issues with liability, the PCA license being unique to California, gaining education needed to understand and evolve with technology and biosciences, and maintaining trust with farmers
Other recommendations: Use the UCIPM website to check information regarding rotation cycle for active ingredients on crops (can help prevent pesticide resistance), connect with those you meet at events such as this one on LinkedIn, attend the Student Networking Event at the CAPCA Conference in October, use your personal values & goals to help establish a work life balance
Thank you to all who attended and the 4 amazing professionals who imparted wisdom upon us! We can't wait to see you all at our next Pizza with a PCA Event (date to be determined). 🌱
